【ARCFE News】 USCIS REVEALED NEW MISSION STATEMENT

02/14/2022 by ARCFE U.S.

USCIS upholds America’s promise as a nation of welcome and possibility with fairness, integrity, and respect for all we serve.”

On February 9th, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced its new mission statement. Last year, the agency asked its employees to send in words that they felt best illustrated the work that they are doing. The new mission statement is a reflection of their workforce, the priorities of the Biden Administration, and USCIS Director Jaddou’s vision for an inclusive and accessible agency.

The mission statement is as follow:

USCIS upholds America’s promise as a nation of welcome and possibility with fairness, integrity, and respect for all we serve.

The new mission statement is a stark contrast to the steps taken in 2018 by the Trump Administration, which removed the reference of the U.S. being a “nation of immigrants” from the USCIS mission statement. The policies under the Trump Administration have also made it very hard with visa processing. For instance, H-1B visa extension was treated as a new application, leading to an increase in RFEs (Request For Evidence - USCIS requests for additional documents from the applicant). These policies increased delays which also in turn led to a surge in administrative costs for sponsoring employers.

Director Jaddou released the following statement on February 9th announcement:

“At its core, USCIS is about delivering decisions to families, businesses, workers, and those seeking refuge in our country on their applications, petitions, requests, and appeals. This new mission statement reflects the inclusive character of both our country and this agency. The United States is and will remain a welcoming nation that embraces people from across the world who seek family reunification, employment or professional opportunities, and humanitarian protection.

“The work of USCIS makes the possibility of America a reality for immigrants, the communities and economies they join, and the nation as a whole. At USCIS, we know that every time we grant an immigration or naturalization benefit, we are fostering the opportunity to help us build a stronger America. And when we offer refuge to those in need of protection we are living up to our nation’s highest ideals.

“USCIS is committed to ensuring that the immigration system we administer is accessible and humane. As we look towards the future, my commitment will remain the same – USCIS will continue to serve the public with respect and fairness, and lead with integrity to reflect America’s promise as a nation of welcome and possibility today and for generations to come.”

“I believe this is an important change from USCIS, for the better. The agency’s leadership is signaling that it will take a new, less hostile tone towards applications. I expect for this notion to take a while to trickle down to the everyday work of USCIS, but it is great to see the leadership’s stance changing,” said Atlanta-based immigration attorney Audra Doyle on Linkedin. While the term “nation of immigrants” has not been reinstated, the new mission statement has a welcoming tone which promises fairness when dealing with immigrant’s applications.
