Demolition has been completed at 23-10 43rd Avenue in Long Island City, clearing the site for the future PS508Q public school building.
According to New York YIMBY, the former five-story office building has been removed, although excavation for the new school has not yet begun. The approximately 0.49-acre site is located between 23rd and 24th streets within the Special Long Island City Mixed-Use District.
Designed by ESKW/Architects for the New York City School Construction Authority, the planned six-story building will contain approximately 90,000 square feet and serve about 550 students from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. It will also include a citywide District 75 program for students with significant disabilities.
Plans include classrooms, a cafeteria, library, music and art spaces, a flexible gymnasium and auditorium, and a fenced rooftop play area. The façade design uses earth-toned brick and a patterned exterior inspired by movement from the nearby elevated subway tracks.
The property is close to the Court Square–23rd Street subway station, with access to the E, F, G and 7 trains. A presentation made to Queens Community Board 2 listed an estimated September 2028 opening, although construction schedules may continue to change as the project progresses.
Why the PS508Q School Project Matters for New York Real Estate
The project shows how public infrastructure is expanding alongside Long Island City’s continued development.
For clients following the area, the practical takeaway is simple: schools, transportation and community facilities help determine whether a neighborhood can support residents and families over the long term.
EB-5 Investor Insight
1. Neighborhood fundamentals extend beyond new buildings
A strong location should also offer transportation, schools and everyday services that support real demand from residents.
2. Project milestones should be identified accurately
Demolition completion is meaningful progress, but it is not the same as excavation, construction or project completion. Investors should understand exactly which stage a development has reached.
